Military veterans… Come one, come all! To us at Better Sleep Inc. with Dr. Alina Lyons, our military veterans are VIP patients and we are dedicated to providing premier services to those who have served our country. As we near the holiday season we remain steadfast in our support of our military community especially those who will be spending this season away from their families. From our family at Better Sleep Inc., we would like to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving and we are so thankful for you!

Obstructive sleep apnea affects millions of Americans every year. Our military community is especially vulnerable to its effects as their role in protecting our country often pushes their physical capabilities far beyond what most people would consider comfortable. Sleep deprivation is especially prevelent. In fact, according to research cited by The Sleep Foundation, more than three-quarters of military personnel reported getting less than 7 hours of sleep on a nightly basis and many reported getting less than 5 hours nightly. During some training exercises, a minimum of only four hours of sleep is required.

Although the use of “Sleep Banking” has been a method of mitigating the physical and psychological effects of sleep deprivation during the high stress reality of combat, this practice has negative long term consequences. Training for such realities, nevertheless, requires learned coping techniques and a certain level of familiarity with sleep deprivation as a constant adversary. So what happens when years of “tactical napping,” high-intensity physical demand and poor sleep environment start to accumulate? Rates of insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea and post traumatic stress disorder have soared even though military members affected tend to be younger and more physically fit than those in the civilian population who suffer with similar sleep disturbances. Given what we now know about the correlation of sleep deprivation and heart health, it seems more than likely that the military community will also bear a disproportionate burden to this causal relationship.

Veteran McGuire Air Force Captain, Dr. Alina Lyons has made it her personal mission to make treatment for obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep disturbances easily accessible to our military community. Better Sleep Inc. accepts all major insurance providers including Tricare and offers a very special honorary package for active serving military members at virtually no out of pocket cost to them, one more reason Better Sleep Inc. is considered a military trusted business. Testing and treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is vital for the health of so many in our military community and is as simple as getting a prescription for an at home sleep test and making an appointment. At home sleep tests can determine whether or not preventive treatment is needed to ward off the comorbidites associated with OSA and at Better Sleep Inc. we have the interpreted results within 72 hours. Quick, life saving and simple.

During the demands of the holiday season, sleep can often become a back burner priority when measured against all there is to do to prepare. The value of being gracious to ourselves however, can’t be overstated considering research that confirms Americans have more fatal heart attacks during the holidays than any other time of year. Reduce your risk and protect your heart by ensuring your health with better sleep. Snoring is an indicator of obstructive sleep apnea that shouldn’t be ignored. If you’re one of the millions of Americans that suffers from sleep deprivation, don’t wait to find out what’s at the heart of the problem, your heart will thank you. To those who have served our country, we at Better Sleep Inc. thank you from the bottom of our hearts and wish you a healthy and happy Thanksgiving.
